The purpose of this assignment was to create a video prototype that demonstrates clearly and effectively (and creatively) the functionality of a product.

The Challenge

The challenge was to create a video, maximum 60 seconds minutes in length, that comprehensively and concisely communicates the motivation, usage, and functionality of a product or service.

Components of assignment

  • develop a scenario for this demonstration
  • sketch out a storyboard for the video
  • shoot, edit and package it

For the subject of the video prototype, we had a choice, but all on the theme of transportation. Our task was to explain to a customer of a transportation service why and (more importantly) how he or she would use this service.

We had to select one of the services from the list below.

Constraints

  • Concentrate on the mobile app component of the service.
  • Create a scenario, develop storyboards, shoot and edit the video, add titles or narration, etc.
  • Use live action, not animation.
  • Communicate the user interaction with the app.
  • Use whatever level of video technology and software you are comfortable with or have reasonable access to.

The Process

I sketched two storyboards to brainstorm ideas for the scenario used in the video.  My husband was my co-star and was also the videographer for the portions that I starred in. Since I’m still a novice moviemaker, I used iMovie for the editing of the video.

Storyboards

It became clear after sketching these two scenarios that the first one would be difficult to accomplish in 60 seconds.  I further developed the second scenario in the sketches below and included a “shot list” to ensure that nothing was missed.

Final Video

The narrative for the final video is that a couple are traveling by two different modes of transportation,  bus and car, to meet up.  The one who rides the uses One Bus Away to find his bus is relaxed and reading during the ride.  The vehicle driver gets stuck in traffic, has difficulty finding parking, and eventually pays for parking after arriving late for the date.

Lessons Learned

  • It’s very difficult to shoot on location with two people -I would recruit a third person. We were unable to get all of the shots of us together. We eliminated the initial scene where we left the house at the same time.  It doesn’t make or break the narrative, but I would have preferred to include that shot.
  • Read assignment description thoroughly multiple times – I missed the emphasis on the mobile interaction demo and should have included more emphasis on the One Bus Away interface.
  • I would have included a shot of the bus driver at home looking up the busses to figure out when to leave for a more thorough demonstration of the applications features and benefits.
  • During my critique I received positive feedback from my peers about the juxtaposition of the two different trip experiences.
  • A few minor changes would be to reverse the order of the introduction slide to have the words match the scenarios, and tighten up some of my editing.

Prior to this class I had never created or edited a video and this was a huge fear for me to conquer.  It seemed like such an art form that was beyond my skill level and experience.  This class was forced me to conquer my fear and learn how to create and edit short movies.  I truly enjoyed this assignment.  While my skills are not well developed, my confidence is growing with each video I create and the more I use the tools.

Version 2

I made an alternate version with different music which is included below. It’s interesting to see how much the choices influenced the tone of the video.
